Online workouts have been around for quite some time now. They’ve become increasingly popular due to the recent pandemic. At this point you’ve probably already googled all the perks of working out virtually or online. But what are the cons? Are they crucial? Is there a workaround?

Let’s find this out. We will deep dive into the biggest disadvantages of online/virtual workouts and will see whether those can be fixed or improved. Here they go.

Absence of Real Life Interactions

We as humans are social creatures. Most of us like interacting with other people be it a date or a foreign language class. Workouts are no different. Many people don’t like taking online workouts since they are seeking real interactions with their trainer or other people. Therefore, avoiding boring apps, pre-recorded video workouts, various training plans that lack any human interaction whatsoever. Moreover, since there aren’t any coaches around you either to correct your form or technique, which may lead you to injury or incorrect exercises that will do you more harm than good.

Lack of Personalization & Community

The problem with these services is that they are not personalized to an individual’s needs. They are just trying to help you out by providing you with the exact same framework that other millions of people receive regardless of your own health goals. Plus, there aren’t any people around you like when you are at the gym. You are alone on your own. Additionally, when you are at home on your own with no supervision whatsoever — it’s easy to get distracted, without an instructor or a friend there to encourage you.

Technical Issues

One of the biggest hurdles of online workouts is the technical side of things. First off, your entire experience is highly reliant upon your internet connection (speed) and the strength of your WI-FI signal in general. If it’s too weak, then you simply won’t be able to have a nice workout and will be distracted by all the glitches and drops of signal. You will need a phone that supports that particular app or at least a laptop if it’s a desktop solution. Also, you will need a decent quality webcam if there is video calling involved.

It Can be Costly

When you are diving into online workouts there is a big chance that you won’t know where to start from. As soon as you google some online courses — you will be instantly bombarded by numerous ads selling you instant dreams with basically no real effort from your side. If you fall into this trap, you might waste a pretty hefty amount of money. There are lots of scams out there, which claim to have “the magic formula” that simply doesn’t exist. If it sounds too good to be true — it probably is.

You Don’t Have Access to All The Machinery

Do you like running on treadmills? Sweating on that orbitrack? Or perhaps you are a heavy lifter and prefer pushing that barbell to your absolute limits? Well, if you are working out at home and you don’t have a personal sophisticated home gym, then all of these aren’t available to you at your online workouts. So you will be pretty much stuck to those exercises that don’t require any machinery, which may not be the best thing for you. You may have some dumbbells in your closed or a mat for doing yoga, but will those be enough?

Limited Space & Grumpy Neighbors

You might be living in a small space or sharing your apartment with some roommates, which will make it difficult for you to start exercising at home and doing online virtual workouts in general. Plus, if you are into some intense workouts, then your neighbors might not be really happy with all the jumping and running. Oh, and if you really like blasting some loud music to get into the mood of working out and burn those calories in style, then your neighbors most likely won’t appreciate that either.
